Graphic titled Key Market Themes: return of the strategic deal; targeted, high-value acquisitions

A recent tally from the Institute for Mergers, Acquisitions and Alliances shows that the global M&A market logged 623 announced deals between 30 Jun and 6 Jul, totalling $43.64 billion.

Read it again, and let sink in, $43 billion in a week, in a time, investors are being dazzled by mixed signals from the market and economic institutions are revising down the World growth mandate.

High‑value transactions dominated, 17 deals above $500 million represented 84% of total deal.

The week’s standout transaction was Athora’s agreement to buy the Pension Insurance Corporation Group for $7.78 billion, giving Athora a major UK presence.

And here is an interesting fact, the deal volume is declining but there is a catch. Despite an 8% decline in deal volume, total value rose more than 5% week‑over‑week!

This data reinforces two themes:

(1) strategic deals are back as companies look for scale and platform expansion;

(2) quality matters more than quantity. Deal volume may be lower than in the boom years, but targeted acquisitions are still being done at significant sizes.
